The second day of the festival

The second day of the festival continued with the workshop held by the film costumes and make-up specialists Dana Istrate and Ioana Angelescu, whose professional secrets were "stolen" by those attending who accepted to become, even though for only a while, "horror" models. In the evening, those present in Biertan (including the tourists which became unconditional fans of the films) got cold shivers down their spines during the South-African horror The Dead (Howard & Jonathan Ford, 2010), followed by brief moments of musical relaxation at the Méliés Garden where, at 9:30 PM, the EINUIEA quartet played a live score for Nosferatu. The day ended with two „take no prisoners” experiences in Vertigo – the ultra-violent British thriller Kill List (Ben Wheatley, 2011) and the hyper-funny Cuban zombie horror Juan de los Muertos (Alejandro Brugues, 2011).

The first day of the festival

Lets recap some of the films which are about to be screened: Attack the Block, the 2011 phenomenon in terms of big-screen extraterrestrial invasions; the 30-year anniversary of one of the landmarks of the modern horror genre, The Thing, in a digitally restored copy; the Spanish Mientras duermes; Rammbock, a German horror both brief and funny; and his Canadian counterpart, Eddie, the Sleepwalking Cannibal. We are all shivering with an-ti-ci..pation!

Exhilirating ending for the first edition of the “FULL…

The last screening on Friday, Juan de los Muertos, the über-funny Cuban zombie horror – the first one ever made! – heated up things and proved that the festival successfully combines horror and humor. Consequently, Saturday screenings turned Biertan into a full on celebration.

The day began with a cartoons special screening for the local kids and continued with the second session of the film costumes and special make-up effects workshop held by Dana Istrate and Ioana Angelescu – soon after, the Central Square was filled with witches, zombies and other various monsters which delighted tourists and cinephiles alike –, while the Papergirl cultural project, allowed the younger ones display their talent for drawing. Beside the artistic and work activities (in the morning, the Full Moon team repaired the Biertan infirmary), those present in the Central Square enjoyed a new day of culinary delicacies provided at the Traditional Fair: rhubarb cake, cheese mixed with caraway, smoked pork fat, delicious barbecued meats, waves of cold Silva beer, traditional spirits and the delicious cocktails made by Casa TIFF.

The screening schedule began with the second collection of Shadows, turning Karloff Auditorium into the most crowded place in the area. The screening continued with the Babycall premiere, where Noomi Rapace is a young mother tormented by the strange noises coming from the nursery monitor installed in her boy's bedroom, and the rerun of Kill List, the most successful independent British film of the last year. The Karloff program was closed by Red State, the fearless horror satire by Kevin Smith.

As soon as it got dark, the audience (season ticket owners, press, locals and tourists) moved to the two open air cinemas, Melies and Vertigo where, covered in blankets, they enjoyed two very different screenings: the French Le village des ombres (2010, Fouad Benhammou), inspired by the already classic Vidocq and Le pacte des loups, and The Tunnel (2011), by Carlos Ledesma, an excellent „found footage movie” which tells the story of a television crew who, in a network of abandoned train tunnels deep beneath the heart of Sydney, finds something that was never supposed to be found.

The third day of the festival ended with the midnight screening of the trash musical The Rocky Horror Picture Show (Jim Sharman, 1974), the absolute highlight of the first edition. The Vertigo open air cinema turned into a dancing, laughing and singing contest, both TRHPS aficionados and novices proving why this film, which basically invented the term of "cult movie",  still defies any classifications.

The first edition of the "Full Moon" Horror & Fantasy Film Festival had three screening venues, two outdoor and one indoor: Melies Garden was hosted by the back yard of the Parochial House, while Cinema Vertigo, was opened in the yard of the old school. The third screening venue, Karloff Auditorium, was renovated by the festival team inside the former Biertan cinema, closed down for the past 20 years while, before 1948, it had been the ball room of the Stern Hotel, a mid-19^th century building. Restored to its former glory, Karloff Auditorium is, once again, the pride of the local community.

The four-day festival gathered over 3500 viewers, adding up to 800 tickets and 230 seasonal tickets sold.

“Lună Plină” – final exploziv pentru prima ediție

După ce ultima proiecție de vineri, Juan de los Muertos (r. Alejandro Brugues, 2011), hiper-amuzantul horror cubanez cu zombies – primul făcut vreodată! –a încălzit atmosfera și a confirmat că festivalul stă deopotrivă sub semnul groazei și al umorului, ziua de sâmbătă a transformat micul Biertan într-o veritabilă sărbătoare desfășurată pe toate fronturile.

Astfel, ziua a început în forță cu proiecția specială cu desene animate organizate pentru copiii din localitate (și nu numai) în Școala cu clasele I-IV, eveniment continuat cu cea de-a doua zi de workshop de costume de film și machiaj special ținut de specialistele Dana Istrate și Ioana Angelescu – la scurt timp după începerea atelierului, Piața Centrală s-a umplut de vrăjitoare, zombies și alți monstruleți ce au făcut deliciul turiștilor și cinefililor prezenți – și de proiectul cultural-artistic Papergirl, în cadrul căruia cei mici și-au etalat talentul la desen. Pe lângă activitățile creative și cele de muncă pură (dimineața, echipa Lună Plină a renovat dispensarul din Biertan), cei prezenți în număr extrem de mare, încă de la primele ore ale zilei, în Piață, au avut parte de oferta de nerefuzat a Târgului Tradițional organizat de Transilvania Fest: delicii culinare absolute variind de la plăcintă cu rubarbă sau brânză frământată cu chimen și până la slăninuțe afumate și grătare delicioase, toate stropite cu bere Silva, tării regionale și cocteiluri fantastice creație proprie Casa TIFF.

Programul de filme a început cu cel de-al doilea calup de scurtmetraje reunite sub numele de Shadows, screening ce a umplut Cinema Karloff până la refuz, oamenii acceptând sa stea chiar și pe jos pentru a nu pierde întâlnirea cu câteva dintre cele mai reușite tiluri ale genului produse în ultimul an. După premiera filmului Babycall, în care Noomi Rapace e o tânără mamă chinuită de zgomotele ciudate ce se aud din difuzorul instalat în camera băiatului ei, și reluarea filmului Kill List / Lista, cel mai de succes film britanic independent al anului trecut, proiecțiile de la Karloff s-au încheiat într-o aglomerație absolută cu Red State / Ținutul însângerat, satira horror fără-de-milă marca Kevin Smith.

Odată cu lăsarea întunericului, spectatorii (abonați, presă acreditată, localnici și turiști) s-au mutat în grup în cele două cinematografe în aer liber, Grădina Melies și Cinema Vertigo unde, bine înfofoliți în pături, au avut parte de două proiecții extrem de diferite: thrillerul atmosferic Le village des ombres / Satul umbrelor (2010, r.Fouad Benhammou), ce trimite, via tema relației dintre aristocrați și tinerețea veșnică, la deja celebrele Vidocq și Le pacte des loups și, respectiv, The Tunnel (2011), semnat Carlos Ledesma, un excelent  „found footage movie” ce spune  povestea unei echipe de filmare care descoperă, într-o rețea abandonată de tuneluri de metrou de sub orașul Sydney, ceva ce n-ar fi trebuit găsit niciodată.

Cea de-a treia zi a festivalului s-a încheiat apoteotic, la miezul nopții, cu premiera pe marele ecran a musicalului trash The Rocky Horror Picture Show (regia Jim Sharman, 1974), highlight al acestei prime ediții, absolut și definitiv. Cinema Vertigo s-a umplut dincolo de numărul de scaune existente: s-a cântat, s-a râs, s-a tropăit, s-a aplaudat la grămadă, „specialiștii” în TRHPS și începătorii în domeniu demonstrând de ce acest midnight-movie prin definiție sfidează, în continuare, orice clasificare și reprezintă motivul pentru care s-a inventat, practic, termenul de „film cult”.

Prima ediție a Festivalului Internațional de Film Horror și Fantastic „Lună Plină” s-a desfășurat în trei săli de cinema, două de exterior și unul de interior. Grădina Melies a fost găzduită de curtea din spatele Casei Parohiale iar Cinema Vertigo, de curtea școlii vechi. Cel de-al treilea cinema, Sala Karloff, a fost renovat de către echipa festivalului în cadrul fostului cinematograf din Biertan, închis vreme de 20 de ani după ce, înainte de 1948, fusese sala de bal a Hotelului Stern Hotel, o clădire de la mijlocul secolului al XIX-lea. Readus la gloria de odinioară, Cinema Karloff a redevenit, cu ocazia festivalului, mândria localității.

Cele patru zile de festival au înregistrat peste 3500 de spectatori, cu 800 de bilete și 230 de abonamente vândute.

Howard & Jonathan Ford, 2010), urmate de un moment de relaxare melomană la Grădina Méliés unde, începând cu 21:30 cvartetul EINUIEA a asigurat live coloana sonoră pentru Nosferatu, și de două experiențe „take no prisoners” la Cinema Vertigo – ultra-violentul thriller britanic Kill List / Lista (r. Ben Wheatley, Marea Britanie, 2011) și hiper-amuzantul horror cubanez cu zombie – primul făcut vreodată! – Juan de los Muertos (r. Alejandro Brugues, 2011).

“Lună Plină” start reușit pentru prima ediție

După o primă proiecție – Eddie, the Sleepwalking Cannibal / Eddie, canibalul somnambul (r. Boris Rodriguez, Canada 2012) – la care publicul a intrat relativ timid, sala Karloff s-a umplut rapid pentru aniversarea a 30 de ani de la premiera clasicului The Thing / Creatura (r. John Carpenter, SUA 1982). Mai mult decât atat, odată cu sosirea serii, la 21:30, cele două cinematografe în aer liber – Grădina Méliés și Cinema Vertigo, și-au împărțit frățește spectatorii pentru deschiderea oficială a festivalului – Attack the Block / Invazie în cartier (r. Joe Cornish, Marea Britanie 2011) a stârnit hohote de râs întrerupte cu greu de micile sperieturi inerente apariției unor monstrocei pufoși, cu colți fosforescenți și foarte fioroși – și, respectiv, premiera filmului spaniol Mientras duermes / Somn ușor (r. Jaume Balaguero, Spania 2011), un excelent thriller atmosferic mai deranjant chiar decât cele mai explicite dintre filmele gore. Seara s-a încheiat apoteotic și ultra-aglomerat cu Rammbock (r. Marvin Kren, Germania 2011), cei prezenți gata să țină piept fiorilor de frig și frică grație berii Silva și unor păturici proprietate personală cum nu se poate mai bine-venite.

Vineri, 17 august și sâmbătă, 18 august, între orele 11:00 și 14:00, în spațiul din apropierea Pieței Centrale, lângă terasa "Lună Plină", denumit Atelierele Fantastice „Luna Plină”, vor avea loc workshopurile de costum de film și demonstrații de machiaj special de film horror și fantastic, susținute de o echipă profesionistă cu o bogată experiență în teatru și cinema, formată din scenograful Dana Istrate și make-up artist-ul Ioana Angelescu. Pe toată durata festivalului, cele două artiste vor avea deschisă o expoziție personală cu obiecte de decor cinematografic, costume și măști de latex.

“Nosferatu” and “Kill list”

There will be blood! Screened for the first time ever in Romania at the first edition of „Full Moon” – Horror & Fantasy Film Festival, Kill List is, by and far, the most successful independent British film of the last year. Partly gory homage to the classic The Wicker Man (1973), Ben Wheatley's second feature tells the story of a hitman who, a year after a botched job, takes on a new assignment but soon, what has started off as an easy task soon unravels, sending the killer into the heart of darkness. The film premiered at the South by Southwest Festival and was selceted in the official competitions and/or showcases of various film festivals such as Helsinki, Toronto, Vancouver, Stockholm, Rotterdam și Beaune. Kill List is the "go to" film for thouse who really want to keep up with the latest trends in terms of horror cinema.

Another not to be missed event of "FULL MOON" is the concert screening of Nosferatu (directed by F.W. Murnau, 1922), accompanied live by the Einuiea quartet (Călin Torsan, Silviu Fologea, George Turliu, Juan-Carlos Negretti). Nosferatu is generally considered the first great horror film ever made and still manages, 90 years after its premiere, to hold a strange dreamlike grip on the imagination.

Those who love a good scare but could do with some laughter, too, will definitely love Rammbock: Berlin Undead! (directed by Marvin Kren, 2011), a to the point German horror where imagination works wonders, and Eddie, the Sleepwalking Cannibal (directed by Boris Rodriguez, 2012), one of the most recent festival favorite around the world (Amsterdam, Edinburgh, Fantasporto, Tribeca).

At the same time, for those who are in the mood for a good zombie thrill but without the additional tongue-in-cheek humor, South Africa has prepared an absolute gore fest: The Dead (Howard & Jonathan Ford, 2010), selected in Brussels, the holy grail of fantasy festivals.

Last but not least, as horror cinema is not all about blood on the walls and, sometimes, a good scare is more successful than ten ripped or sawed-off hands, the selection of the first edition encompasses some of the most successful thrillers of the past two years: the Australian The Tunnel (2011), by Carlos Ledesma, the story of a television crew who, in a network of abandoned train tunnels deep beneath the heart of Sydney, finds something that was never supposed to be found; the Norwegian Babycall (2011), by Pål Sletaune, where Noomi Rapace is a young mother tormented by the strange noises coming from the nursery monitor installed in her boy's bedroom; the French Le village des ombres (2010, Fouad Benhammou), inspired by the already classic Vidocq and Le pacte des loups; and, last but not least, the Spanish Mientras duermes (2011), the most recent output of Jaume Balagueró, the author of the cult movie [Rec], now more penetrating and subversive than ever.

The first edition of "FULL MOON", the only film festival in Romania focused exclusively on horror and fantasy cinema, will take place between 16th and 19th of August 2012, in Biertan, Sibiu County. The festival is organized by Romanian Film Promotion and presented by Transilvania International Film Festival.
